Sustainability

Protecting animal health, supporting ocean ecosystems, and contributing to climate-smart practices

Sustainability is built into everything we do at Acadian Animal Wellness™. As part of Acadian Seaplants, we source our Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed through responsible, science-based harvesting methods that protect biodiversity and marine ecosystems. This ensures the long-term health of our ocean habitats while providing consistent, high-quality raw material for our products.

Our solutions contribute to climate-smart livestock practices

  • Ready-now solutions – unlike some feed additives still in development, our products are proven, commercially available, and easy to integrate.
  • Holistic sustainability – our practices reduce waste, optimize resource use, and maintain traceability from harvest to finished product.

By aligning animal wellness with environmental responsibility, we help producers, feed companies, and companion animal brands meet today’s performance goals while supporting a more sustainable future for the industry and the planet.

Responsible Seaweed Harvesting

We have a dedicated Resource Management team to ensure we’re operating in an environmentally sound business model. This includes our tools and techniques, as well as where and how often we harvest Ascophyllum nodosum. Our team includes specialists with PhDs, and their job is to monitor the growth and ecology of the Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed beds, with a focus on ensuring we keep this valuable resource. Because of this we are granted long-term governmental licenses, which allows us to ensure security of supply globally.

Each year, we harvest approximately 25% of the seaweed available within our licensed areas. This deliberate approach reflects our science-based resource management philosophy, using harvesting methods designed to be gentle on the ecosystem while allowing the resource to regenerate quickly.

After decades of harvesting, we’re able to determine the impact on the biomass and height of the seaweed.  Our research shows no significant decrease in biomass and in some cases the biomass even increased! We’re proud to say that our world-leading resource management system has led to a seaweed stock that is both plentiful and healthy.
